What is Myopia?
Myopia, another term for nearsightedness, refers to a condition in which you can see objects up close clearly while objects remain blurry off in the distance. Nearsightedness develops if your eyeball is too long or if the cornea, which is the clear front cover of your eye, is too curved. This means the light that enters your eye focuses incorrectly, causing distant objects to appear blurred.
What Causes Myopia?
Even though myopia affects millions of people, the exact cause isn’t known. Due to increase in near work and device use, the prevalence has sky rocketed. Family history also appear to be a contributing factor.
For the most part, myopia first develops in school-age children. Since your eyes continue to grow during childhood, myopia generally progresses until around age 20. Even though it is most common in children and young adults, myopia may also develop in adults, mostly due to near visual demands or health conditions, including diabetes.
The Wall Street Journal just featured this worldwide growing problem of childhood myopia (nearsightedness) and various treatments in an article. San Diego Eye Clinic provides myopia treatments mentioned in the article to stop you or your child's myopia from getting worse. Please Click Here to read the full article.
What Are San Diego Eye Clinic’s Myopia Control Options?
Myopia control can create positive changes in the structure and focusing of your eye that reduce stress and fatigue associated with the development and progression of nearsightedness.
Scientific evidence has proven that myopic patients are more vulnerable to a range of sight threatening disease and complications, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
At San Diego Eye Clinic, our non invasive treatments include contact lenses and special prescription eye drops. Studies have shown that using this type of a myopia management plan can reduce the risk of myopia progression by 78%, versus no treatment.
Overnight Contact Lenses referred to as Orthokeratology: designed to be worn at night only and taken out upon awakening. These lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye during the night and allow for clear vision without glasses or contact lenses during the day. This allows you or your child to see clearly during work/school and sport activities. This is a non-invasive, reversible treatment that has proven results.
Specialized soft contact lenses worn during the day that help reduce the myopia progression.
Specific formulation of a prescription eye drop that has shown to decrease the elongation of the eyeball that is prevalent in myopic eyes. These eye drops are tailored to the patients age and specifics.
Myopia Can Be Managed
The goal of myopia management is to slow or even stop the progression of myopia and reduce its impact on your child’s life. The younger myopia management begins, the more effective the treatment.
We are excited at San Diego Eye Clinic to educate and encourage our patients to take control of their myopia and prevent future eye diseases secondary to myopia.
